Hand Problems in Motorcycle Riders

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, Trigger Finger, Tennis Elbow and Thumb Arthrosis are some of the most common problems experienced by motorcycle riders. The good news is that most of these conditions can be prevented or effectively treated.

Nerve compression called Carpal Tunnel and Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is caused by keeping the elbow and wrist in a flexion position for a long time. It's good practice to periodically move your hands and elbows and change hand position as often as possible when standing in traffic or at a stop light to avoid these problems.

Vibration can cause harmful and permanent damage to the nerves. Nerves are overloaded with sensory input from vibration and the result can be permanent nerve damage. To prevent this, try to reduce the vibration on the handlebar as much as possible and use a good pair of padded or gel-filled gloves.

Holding the Handlebars Tight and Incorrect

Holding the handlebars tightly in the same position for too long can strain the tendons that move the hand and wrist, as well as the small joints of the hand.

The best way to overcome this problem is to periodically move your fingers and thumb and avoid a strong or firm grip on the device. You can also purchase a throttle lock, which can be helpful on longer trips, just as cruise control in a car will do.

Applying ice to the hand after a long journey will help reduce the inflammatory response of the hand tendons. Running your hands under warm water the next morning will increase blood flow to the fingers and help your hands get rid of the inflammatory fluid that has accumulated overnight. If you experience stiffness or locking, pinching or snagging in a finger or thumb, you should consult an orthopedist.

In summary, reduce the stress on your joints: take breaks, move your joints, and change the position of your hands as often as possible.
